Study Handout on 1 Corinthians 2:15
“The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one.” – 1 Corinthians 2:15 (ESV)
📖 Context
Written by Paul to the Corinthian church (c. 53–55 AD).
Corinthian believers struggled with divisions, valuing human wisdom over God’s wisdom.
Paul reminds them that the Christian life is not built on eloquence or worldly knowledge but on God’s wisdom revealed by the Spirit (1 Cor 2:1, 10).
👤 Who Is the Spiritual Person?
One who is born again and indwelt by the Holy Spirit.
Transformed from natural (worldly) to spiritual (heavenly) through faith in Christ.
Equipped to discern both seen and unseen realities (cf. 2 Cor 4:17–18).
🕊️ What Does It Mean to “Judge All Things”?
To evaluate and discern all matters through the Spirit’s wisdom.
Not arrogance, but Spirit-led discernment.
Balances eternal perspective with faithful living in the present world.
🌍 Core Truths the Spiritual Person Can Confidently Judge
Through the Spirit, Christians can affirm and discern these foundational truths:
God created all things, seen and unseen.
Humanity is made in God’s image but fallen in sin.
Marriage, family, and society are God’s design.
God governs creation by His law of order and nature.
Jesus Christ, God’s Son, came to redeem humanity.
Jesus died for sins, rose on the third day, ascended to heaven, and will return in judgment.
God will renew creation; believers will live with Him eternally, while unbelievers face eternal separation.
✝️ Application
Embrace your calling: Christians are not passive observers but Spirit-filled discerners.
Judge with humility: Rely on God’s Word and Spirit, not personal pride.
Live with confidence: God’s wisdom equips us to face the world’s confusion.
