Psalm 1:2

But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. - Psalm 1:2
For Christians, spiritual maturity manifests in various ways, one of which is how we engage with the Bible.
Many Christians have not read the entire Bible, or even a single book, and may only know a few passages. After hearing the Gospel and accepting Jesus as Savior and Lord, we often lack deep knowledge and understanding of Scripture. As we grow in spiritual maturity, we come to know the Bible and the truth and wisdom God reveals through it. In truth, the reverse is also true: we mature spiritually because we read and study the Bible, and our approach to reading it profoundly shapes our growth.
Two decades ago, after coming to Christ, I began reading the Bible through verses from sermons or Bible study materials. However, my reading lacked system, depth, or joy. I preferred listening to engaging sermons by favorite pastors and enjoyed Christian music. On a 20-hour solo drive for a new job, I listened to sermons and Christian music the entire way, feeling energized and inspired. I also listened to a few Bible books, but they didn’t bring the same joy as sermons or music.
Sermons and Christian music can aid spiritual growth, but true maturity comes from delighting in and meditating on God’s Word, as Psalm 1:2 teaches: “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.” Just as our physical bodies require nutritious meals daily—not just appetizers—to thrive, our spiritual lives need the nourishment of Scripture, not merely introductory “appetizers” like sermons. As we savor physical food, we should delight in the spiritual food of the Bible.
Later in my Christian journey, I continued to enjoy Bible-based sermons and Christian music but began studying the Bible systematically, diving deeply into its books, memorizing passages, and meditating on them. My approach shifted from viewing Bible reading as an obligation to finding delight in God’s Word. This is just the beginning of tasting the sweetness and goodness of Scripture in my life. I’m not boasting about my Bible study journey; rather, the more I delight in God’s infinite wisdom, the more humbled I become.
When we delight in and meditate on God’s Word, we are truly blessed!
